You don't come up to fire lookouts for stoves, refrigerators, or heaters. What you do come up for are the unmatched views and splendor of this wonderful land. When we made it up, lightning and storm clouds were all around and in the distance was a sunset that was changing splendid colors by the second. And best of all- seclusion, peace, and time to give thanks.
The lookout was misrepresented. There is no bed. There are two metal cots. The propane heater is not working properly, and if you can get it lit it barely puts out heat. The website said there was a propane refrigerator. There is not. One of the lights has not mantle and is not usable. The weather took a turn when we were there and we could not keep it warm at all. The good news is that the forest ranger at the Paisley ranger station is a phenomenal asset to the forest service and drove up to make sure we got out safe during the unforseen storm.
This is my seventh lookout visit in Oregon. Bald Butte's best assets are its remoteness and its view. If you want to be alone, here's your ticket. We arrived on a windy stormy day and were thrilled to find the lookout was clean and comfy. We reheated chili and baked biscuits in the little oven while we watched an incredible storm show off around us. Luxury! Thank you FS folks for rehabbing this gem.
Amazing sights on top. Very cold. It hailed in the middle of June. One of the roads to it is totally understand drive able, covered in fallen trees. The other road is up kept and drive able in a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The propane heater works great. The only caveat is that you have to light it with some matches. The electric striker didn't seem to work. The first day there it was very very windy. The next day was a lot better. Wear layers. The wind chill can be unbearable at times.
